When and why did you first choose to volunteer with parkrun?
Way back in 2013! I realised how much I loved running parkrun, and that the only reason I got that enjoyment is because other people either sacrificed their runs, or their lie-ins to volunteer and make it happen for me – so I thought I should give back.
Which is your favourite volunteer role at parkrun?
I really like doing tokens. It’s great seeing people as they finish – the super fast guys racing to be first in, all the way to the walkers who are super happy to have finished no matter how long it’s taken. It’s such a positive way to start a Saturday.
What would you say to someone who is unsure if volunteering is for them?
The volunteer roles are so varied, there is something for everyone – I’m too nervous to try timekeeping (as I think I might crack under pressure!) but there are other less serious roles. Marshaling is great, as you feel like a hero when people shout “Thanks Marshal” when they run by – and pretty much all you have to do is stand there!
What are you doing when you're not at parkrun?
At the moment, running around and around Buile Hill park – as it’s my closest bit of green while we’re in lockdown. But in “real life” I work in Marketing, so that keeps me pretty busy. Running is a great stress reliever.
What song would be your parkrun anthem (either for volunteering or walk/jog/running)?
My own heavy breathing! I used to always run with music, but realised I love running through Worsley Woods listening to the birds – if you can hear them over the rhythmic footsteps of another 400 odd runners!
